Orban: Hungary in negotiations with US, aims to reach a good deal

BUDAPEST (Reuters) – Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban says the European Union is waiting for “difficult months,” but that his country was ready for the return of U.S. President Donald Trump and that ongoing negotiations with the new U.S. administration were underway.

“We are ready for President Trump’s return and we are in negotiations with the United States to reach a good deal,” Orban said in a Facebook post.

Speaking about the EU’s first summit after Trump’s inauguration, which was held in Brussels, Orban said it was a “strange session” and that the majority in Brussels thinks they can “avoid Trump,” but that, as he pointed out, “is not possible.”

Orban pointed out that Trump “reverse the world” through the measures he took in the first days of his term, stressing that the U.S. no longer has a “panic consideration of gender issues,” funding for organizations backed by George Soros, nor support for illegal migration or the war between Russia and Ukraine.

“All attempts that bureaucrats from Brussels have tried to impose on us in recent years are over,” Orban said, adding that world trade rules would be changed and that Trump would protect the interests of the United States, even to the detriment of Europe.

Orban stressed that it is necessary to reach an agreement in order to preserve economic ties with the United States, adding that a good agreement can only be reached between those who respect each other.
